Mother's Day

This year on Mothers Day CJ and I went on an adventure - that's right an adventure to the ER. We had all been enjoying the nice beautiful day and were all out in the back yard soakin' up some rays. The boys were playing with the dog and the chickens. Navy (the 10 month old lab) decided he wanted to play some catch so he brought Daddy a throw toy. They did not play long before the accident occurred.
The story goes like this.... CJ was walking towards his dad from one direction and Navy was so focused on the toy that he and CJ collided - neither one of them seeing each other before they hit. CJ fell down and landed on his arm. He only cried for a minute and then got up to go play some more but we noticed he would not use his left hand to do anything. He whimpered occasionally. We decided to
wait a little bit because we could not see that anything was really wrong except for feeling a small lump (maybe a bruise) - he never complained. After we ate dinner CJ kept wanting to wash his arm off and so we decided something must be really wrong. It looked just a little bit different (but maybe just swollen- hard to say on a little guy that still has some baby fat) so I took him over to the Emergency Room.
As we all know Emergency Rooms are never fast. So finally after several hours of the open and shut the door game and reading his books several times, the x-ray tech came in and took some pictures. (No one at the hospital thought anything was wrong except for maybe a good bruise because he never complained.) Then about an hour and a half later the doctor came back and said he fractured his radius and so we will go ahead and splint it.
The nurse came in and took one look at us and I could tell he was thinking "Oh great a two year old - this is going to be difficult." CJ was probably the easiest person he had ever given a splint to because he fell asleep. Poor guy- such a long day.
We went back to the doctor on Wednesday to see the Pediatric Orthopedic Specialist and they decided to give his arm a different kind of splint (called a sugar splint- because it wraps around his elbow from his knuckles to the palm of his hand). He had not just fractured his radius but had also bent his ulna (I had no idea you could bend a bone without breaking it or showing signs of stress - that's what you get for being two years old and having rubbery bones.)
So after the doctor told us all of the many things he can't do (no playing rough, playing outside, digging, running, oh and don't get it wet- mostly just sit and forget about being a little boy) he gave us the next date June 11. So we will go in on June 11 and we will keep our fingers crossed that we will be able to take off the splint then.
